For God hath not given us the spirit of fear but of power and of love, and of a sound mind. – 2 Timothy 1:7 These are interesting times in which to be alive in America. On Wednesday January 20 at 12:00 noon Joseph R. Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States of America. It has been a time of great upheaval and uncertainty in regards to the government of these United States. Strong feelings, words, and actions have divided the country along poltical lines. I have noticed that there are two things missing in regards to how people feel about the government and the nation at large. The social unrest that spilled into the streets in the summer of 2020 as a result of racial injustice has caused an additional lack of trust in government, law enforcement and racial equality. There is no trust and there is no faith. The pandemic known as Covid-19 seems to be raging out of control. The promised vaccine to bring about a cure has been issued in short supply versus demand leading to additional frustrations. Trust is defined as to have confidence or belief in something or someone. Faith is conviction based on hearing. When trust is replaced by mistrust and faith is replaced by fear disaster is right around the corner. When people are living without trust and faith chaos may result. As believers in Christ do we have an answer for the world? Paul wrote to Timothy in the second letter to encourage him and remind him that he was to be a good soldier of Christ. Timothy by nature was not an outgoing personality type and tended to shy away from controversies. In the first letter Paul told Timothy how to administer the church in terms of doctrine and duties. In this second letter Paul reminds Timothy not to be afraid but to unashamedly discharge his ministry. As Paul told Timothy how to handle his fear, we also do not give in to fear in the midst of lack of confidence in institutions or society because we have faith in someone who is greater than anything or anyone. The bible reminds us of who God is and who we are and His overarching plan for the world. He has given us his Holy Spirit who indwells us and leads and guides us and removes the spirit of fear and gives us Himself. When our strength is not in ourselves but in our God who is the ultimate one who has power and love this focus gives us clear thinking and a regulated mind. The principles of the Word of God help give us proper perspective to handle whatever is going on in the world because we believe greater is He who is in us than he that is in the world. H. PERFECTION IS ACHIEVED NOT WHEN THERE IS NOTHING MORE TO ADD, BUT WHEN THERE IS NOTHING LEFT TO TAKE AWAY.

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering (for he is faithful that promised) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. – Hebrews 10:23-25It is February 2021 and we have been living with the pandemic known as the Corona Virus for 11 months. Our lives have been dramatically changed since the virus has affected us socially, economically, mentally, financially, and spiritually. When the Lord created Adam in the Garden of Eden he reached a conclusion and said: “It is not good that man should be alone I will make him a helper comparable to him” (2:18). From that moment on we were designed to be social creatures. The pandemic has forced us to isolate in our homes. Our employers have asked or told us to work from home, our schools have gone to the virtual learning mode of education. All of our normal patterns of socializing have been disrupted. Even the church has been impacted as we have gone to using social media such as face book or Zoom to virtually connect. As a temporary solution it will work but there is a danger the longer this form of worship continues. Staying at home and logging in is the easy route, all of the effort that goes with getting ready and coming to church is done away with. There are cases where the weather makes travel difficult if not impossible. There are issues of heath and wellness that also make coming to church difficult. On the other hand staying home can become a choice simply because it is easier than coming to church. Zoom is okay and face book will do but there is something about coming to God’s house and worshiping in person with the fellow saints. What was to be a temporary solution should never become a permanent answer. The writer of Hebrews wrote to address the doubts of those who were having second thought about their conversion to Christ. He issued several warnings throughout the book and one of them was the danger of a believer abandoning the assembly. There are some things that occur when we are physically together that cannot happen when we are not. We are reminded of the faithfulness of God which means even when we waver He does not. The word 'consider' does not mean to give to contemplate it means to observe. Our love and our good works do not just happen they need to be stirred up to occur. The writer of Proverbs declared: As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend (27:17). When Jesus appeared to his disciples in the upper room after his resurrection Thomas was not there. He was told what he had missed and the blessings he did not receive because he was absent from the fellowship. We are closer to the end than the beginning so we should be more determined to be encouragers for and to each other. We don’t win the race by slowing down near the finish line.

Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them. – John 12:35-36 We live in interesting times there are many voices that are trying to claim our attention. How do we stay focused on living for Christ and being relevant to a lost and dieing world? How do we refrain from being consumed with all that is going on around us and being as Jesus warned “salt that has lost its savor.”? This text in John chapter twelve occurs after the triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Jesus talks to his disciples about his impending death then speaks about bringing glory to His Father. The Father responds by speaking from heaven the crowd hears it. Jesus then speaks to the to the Passover crowd and shares two thoughts for both them and us today to consider. The thoughts are believe and become. To have a relationship with Christ we first believe that He is the savior of the world and has come and died on the cross for our sins. He then sealed the deal by being raised from the tomb on the third day. Before we came to Christ Jesus says that we are walking in darkness. He has declared Himself to the light of the world. The darkness that we are walking in is because of sin. When Jesus comes into our lives He removes the darkness of sin and as long as we are with Him we walk in the light. People who do not have Christ are lost because they are in the darkness of sin, just as those in darkness do not know where they are going in the darkness the opposite is true of those who walk with Christ. In Jesus’ day He spoke to those who were in His presence as only having the light of His earthly presence. When He was be gone they would again be walking in spiritual darkness. We must first believe that Jesus is the light of the world and then we came become followers of Him. Serving Christ does not Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. If we truly become followers it is something that we will continue to do. Jesus spoke of a seed being planted in the ground that must die before it brings forth life. We must be willing to die to self in order to live for Christ. As crazy as the world is Jesus is both the answer and the pattern for how to live in today’s world.
